That helps visually to keep it from being bogged down," says Pearson. Matching them to the wall paint also helps unite a space so it feels less cluttered. Another advantage? Burnished antiques add the perfect provincial touch so the home feels cozy and collected, rather than overly formal and fussy. "People sometimes take 'comfort' way too far and end up creating rooms that are bland and uncomfortable," says Brockschmidt. "If this house were filled with big upholstered 'put your feet up' pieces, the place would be hotel-like. We used things like the Indian chairs by the sofa table in the living room less as a place to sit and more to add patina, a little intrigue."

In this outdoor space in Manhattan Beach, California, designer Sandy Koepke found an old curtain rod and hung a cushion from it in order to add a little extra softness.
